Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 April 2026
Northern Compound respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to all visitors, readers, subscribers, and anyone who contacts us through the site. Our goal is to collect as little as is reasonably possible, use it only for the stated purpose, and keep it secure for as long as it is needed.
We are a small independent publication, not a data business, and we have designed this policy to reflect that. If a practice is not described here, we likely do not engage in it; if something is unclear, please reach out and we will respond.
What we collect
We collect a limited set of data, and only what is necessary to operate the publication:
- Newsletter email. When you subscribe, we store your email address and the date you subscribed.
- Contact form submissions. When you send a message through the contact form, we receive the name, email, and message you provide.
- Analytics. Aggregated, privacy-respecting analytics about site traffic, including approximate location (country or region), device type, referrer, and pages viewed. We do not use analytics to identify individuals.
- Server logs. Standard server access logs, including IP address and timestamp, retained for a short period for security and debugging purposes.
How we use it
The data we collect is used to operate the publication: send the newsletter to subscribers who have requested it, respond to enquiries received through the contact form, measure traffic in aggregate to improve our coverage, and maintain the security and stability of the site.
What we do not do
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not serve third-party advertising on the site. Your email address is not shared with suppliers, advertisers, or affiliated businesses.
Cookies
Northern Compound uses only essential cookies and analytics cookies. Essential cookies are required for the site to function. Analytics cookies, where used, are configured to be privacy-respecting and do not build cross-site behavioural profiles. You can disable cookies in your browser settings; portions of the site should continue to work without them.
Third-party services
We rely on a small number of third-party service providers to operate the publication, including hosting, email delivery for the newsletter, and analytics. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies and appropriate contractual safeguards.
Your rights
You have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to request its deletion, and to withdraw consent for any processing based on consent. Newsletter subscribers can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email. For any other request, use the contact page.
Data retention
Newsletter emails are retained until you unsubscribe. Contact form submissions are retained for as long as necessary to respond and maintain a record of correspondence. Server logs and analytics data are retained for a limited period consistent with standard industry practice.
Children
Northern Compound is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of majority. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it promptly.
International readers
Northern Compound is operated from Canada. If you visit the site from outside Canada, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in Canada or in jurisdictions where our service providers maintain infrastructure. By using the site, you consent to this transfer and processing to the extent permitted by applicable law.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the information we hold against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. No method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure; while we aim to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the unlikely event of a data breach that affects subscriber data, we will notify affected individuals and the appropriate Canadian authorities in accordance with applicable law.
Legal basis for processing
Where applicable law requires us to identify a legal basis for processing your personal information, we rely on your consent for newsletter subscriptions and contact form submissions, and on our legitimate interests in operating and improving the publication for analytics and security logging. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing or by contacting us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. The date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised.
